Personal Information
Mike grew up in Watertown, Wisconsin. Mike’ father worked for the local phone company, and his mother stayed at home to raise him and his two sisters throughout his childhood. While stil in high school, Mike began dating his sweetheart and eventual wife, Patty.
After graduating from Watertown High School, Mike went off to the University of Wisconsin, Platteville. While there he studied criminal justice in order to fullfill his lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. However, as Mike was going through his courses he took classess pertaining to law. It was then that he discovered he had a special talent and natural ability to understand the law and its complex intricacies.
One of Mike’s professors noticed his superior abilities and performance and suggested that he consider attending law school. That idea appealed to Mike; so he applied to Marquette Law School and was accepted.
While attending Marquette Law School, Mike and Patty married. During Law School Patty continued to work and support Mike as he attended law classes full time.
Upon graduation, Mike moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin where he intially started working for a firm that did insurance defense. During this period of time Mike was able to see first hand how powerful insurance companies operated and how they tried to do everything they could to keep from paying anything.
After a few short years of representing insurance companies, Mike realized that he was on the wrong side of the fight. From that point forward, he dedicated himself to representing the “little guy.”
Eventually, Mike and Patty had three children, one girl and two boys. As of this year, they are empty nesters as all three children are out of the house, in college or in the workforce.
When Mike is not working, he loves to be out on the water sailing. That is a special joy to him. Additionally, Mike and Patty are active members in their local community and church.
Professional Background
Mike has been practicing law for 26 years. He first took interest in legal work while attending the University of Wisconsin, Platteville where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in Criminal Justice. While Mike originally attended to pursue a career in law enforcement, he realized after taking several criminal and constitutional law courses in college that was destined to pursue a career in law.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Mike chose to attend Marquette Law School where he graduated with honors in 1983. During his tenure at Marquette Law School, Mike went to the finals in a number of national moot court competitions. In his last year of college, Mike worked for an insurance defense firm in the Northwest part of Wisconsin.
Since then, Mike has worked almost strictly in personal injury law. After graduating law school, he worked as a personal injury lawyer for the defense side in Eau Claire, which he pursued for nearly 10 years. He then took his position at McLario, Helm & Bertling, s.c. in January, 1993, and has worked as the firms leading personal injury attorney ever since.
